Apapa, Lagos State – On Friday, April 11, Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, paid a visit to Alabi Yusuf Quadri at the Kirikiri Medium Correctional Centre in Apapa, Lagos.

Yunusa Tanko, the interim national coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, revealed that Obi’s visit to the detained minor was facilitated through the group.

In a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, Tanko shared photos from the visit and stated: "During the visit, he (Obi) engaged with Quadri’s mother and sister, offering his solidarity and assuring the family of his steadfast support during this challenging period."

The visit comes amid growing public concern over Quadri’s detention. Earlier, human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong had confirmed meeting the teenager at the Minimum Security Custodial Centre in Kirikiri, Apapa, verifying that Quadri had been held since January 2025.

Accompanying Tanko on the visit were other key figures from the Obidient Movement, including Morris Monye, the interim director of mobilization, and social activist Moses Paul.

NIGERIAN LADY FACES HARSH PENALTIES FOR SPEAKING OUT ON INSECURITY

Hamdiyya Sidi Shariff, an 18-year-old Nigerian woman, has been given a controversial sentence—either 12 cane strokes, two years in prison, or a ₦50,000 fine—after voicing concerns about the worsening security crisis in Sokoto State.

The case gained widespread attention on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) following Shariff’s arrest in November 2024. She had posted videos online describing the severe impact of bandit attacks in her region, including mass displacement and sexual violence against women.

Authorities accused her of inciting unrest and using offensive language against Sokoto Governor Ahmed Aliyu in a TikTok video. However, court-reviewed translations of her seven videos revealed no evidence of such offenses. Instead, the recordings showed her expressing frustration over the dire security situation without any calls for violence or insults.

In a troubling twist, Shariff was allegedly kidnapped by armed men while trying to retrieve her phone. Reports indicate she was severely beaten, thrown from a moving tricycle, and later detained. She faced charges in both Sharia and Magistrates’ Courts, drawing condemnation from human rights groups.

Amnesty International denounced the intimidation tactics used against Shariff and her lawyer, Abba Hikima, calling it an abuse of power to suppress dissent. The organization urged Nigerian authorities to prioritize addressing Sokoto’s rampant kidnappings, killings, and village destruction rather than punishing those who speak out.

During a February 2025 court hearing, prosecutors presented translated videos and a flash drive as evidence. However, cross-examination revealed that Shariff’s initial statement was taken without legal representation, raising due process concerns. Despite this, the court maintained her bail conditions pending sentencing.

The case has ignited fierce debates online, with many condemning the government’s treatment of Shariff.

RIVERS STATE HIGH COURT DISMISSES SACKED PDP EXECUTIVES BID TO APPEAL JUDGEMENT

PORT HARCOURT – A Rivers State High Court has dismissed an application by the sacked executives of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) seeking leave to appeal their removal from office as interested parties.

The court, presided over by Justice Stephen Jumbo, rejected the motion filed by the former PDP State Chairman, Chukwuemeka Aaron, alongside other ousted executives at the state, local government, and ward levels.

The ruling follows an earlier judgment on January 13, 2025, which nullified the PDP congresses that produced the executives, declaring them illegal due to being conducted in defiance of a court order. The suit was initiated by William Fialasoika and 24 others challenging the legitimacy of the congresses.

Justice Jumbo dismissed the application on the grounds that the PDP, as the defendant in the case, had already filed an appeal against the judgment. The sacked executives, who are loyalists of former Rivers State Governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, sought to challenge their removal independently, but the court ruled their motion unnecessary.
