Denmark’s Retirement Age Hike Sparks Outrage – Less Time for Family

Denmark’s plan to raise the retirement age to 70 has ignited protests, with workers demanding more time for family—sparking a heated debate on aging, labor, and fairness. #RetirementCrisis

Denmark has approved a plan to gradually raise the retirement age to 70, a decision that has drawn strong backlash from future retirees.

Under the new law, the retirement age will increase from 67 to 68 by 2030, then to 69 by 2035, and eventually reach 70. The change applies only to those born after 1971, as the government links retirement age to rising life expectancy.

Many workers, especially those in physically demanding jobs, have voiced frustration. Tommas Jensen, a 47-year-old roofer, told local media, "We’re constantly working with no end in sight. After paying taxes my whole life, I deserve time with my family—not just more years on the job." He criticized the policy as unfair, emphasizing the strain on laborers compared to office workers.

The bill passed with 81 votes in favor and 21 against, continuing Denmark’s trend of adjusting retirement age every five years. However, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has hinted at possible revisions, stating, "We can’t keep pushing retirement further back without considering the human cost."

Unions have mobilized protests in Copenhagen, condemning the move as unjust. Jesper Ettrup Rasmussen, a union leader, argued, "A higher retirement age robs people of their right to a fulfilling later life. Denmark’s economy is strong—why must workers bear the burden?"

Similar debates are unfolding across Europe, where pension ages are rising due to longer lifespans and budget pressures. While Swedes can retire at 63 and Italians at 67, the UK is also reviewing its pension age, currently set at 66 and rising.

Critics stress that after decades of contributions, workers should have the freedom to enjoy their later years—not spend them on the job.
